Black and White Photography

A shift towards design minimalism and monochromatic color schemes
Posted on 30/04/2020

For too many years, black and white photography and photographic art became tragically underrated. With so many modern day advances in color photography and photo printing technologies, as well as ever-revolving color trends in interior design and decorating, it seems the world forgot to continue appreciating all of the merits of black and white photographs. Thankfully, we are starting to see a shift towards design minimalism and monochromatic color schemes, and we think black and white will soon be back in vogue (where it rightly belongs).

Here are a few reasons why we think you should try something new and consider ordering that black and white print this week.

1) It Complements Everything

There’s nothing wrong with a piece of statement art. We love bold colors, vivid scenery, and that “wow” factor that art can bring to a room. But if you are renting your home or flat, or if you’re simply a fickle decorator who likes to change things up every now and then, black and white art is undeniably foolproof when it comes to cohesive decor. Minimalistic enough to not distract from any decor, yet interesting enough to add layers of personality to your home, you really can’t go wrong with a black and white art piece.

2) It’s a Classic

Like anything, there are trends in art that may look dated in the next ten or twenty years. But have you noticed how black and white art from the 20s, 40s, 60s, or even 80s still stands the test of time? Perhaps this is because black and white evokes such a nostalgic feeling; it remains a classic even when trends fade out of style. It’s a safe bet when it comes to purchasing art as an investment or a long-term commitment. It only gets better with age.

3) Simple Storytelling

Monochromatic photography takes away so much distraction that can come along with color, and tells a captivatingly simplistic story. It allows the art appreciator to really admire the finer details and fill in the blanks where necessary, which creates more connection. It emphasizes emotion over semantics, subject over color, and thus paves the way for a really immersive, really individualized art experience.

4) It’s Unique

If you like to be on the cutting-edge, choosing to adorn your walls with black and white art instead of meticulously color-matching your decor is a great way to fulfill this desire. Instead of focusing on color schemes and making sure that your art matches your specific design flair, consider adding a wall of black and white photographs, or simply begin by adding one to your existing gallery wall. This method is an unfussy way to create interest; in a world so accustomed to seeing art in color, investing in black and white art is a surefire way to start a conversation and step outside the box a bit.

At Kolla, black and white photographs will always have a special place in our hearts and on our walls. We hope this inspires you to make space in your home for some black and white art, too.
