"Often I think these photographs are a bit dreamlike, partly because they remove the overpowering details of reality. And perhaps capture a little of the essence of what I felt at the time."

We're so excited to share this collection of photography from Stockholm by the amazing Kazi Ushioda. View his artistic ICM (Intentional camera movement) photographs below, and learn more about Kazi and his photography.

Who is Kazi Ushioda and how did you end up in Stockholm?

I was born in Japan, but my parents moved to Ireland when I was two and I grew up in Dublin. So I have a mix of two heritages. While growing up and indeed for many years afterwards the Irish one was the more forward of the two. But I have become interested in exploring the Japanese side for a while now.

Having travelled and lived in different continents and countries for nearly the last nine years, I am now settled in Stockholm.

Photography has been a longtime interest, starting in secondary school. It then took a back seat for decades, and has now been re-kindled in the digital age.

How did you get in to Intentional camera movement and the less traditional types of photography techniques?

I do love what you might call straight photography. I was always attracted to moody types of images and I became curious to see what alternative techniques might be capable of. I am exploring long exposure, multiple exposure, free lensing as well as intentional camera movement (ICM). Some of these possess an impressionistic capability that seems to better render a dream-like mood or feeling.

Although I’ve been in Sweden for four years now, I still consider myself a bit of a (delighted) stranger here. Maybe I am more inclined to have a sense of wonder in an everyday place in a certain light than a local might. Using these impressionist techniques I try to show my emotional response to being there in the moment.

Often I think these photographs are a bit dreamlike, partly because they remove the overpowering details of reality. And perhaps capture a little of the essence of what I felt at the time. Wasn't it Wordsworth who said that poetry is "emotion recollected in tranquility?"

Do you practice any other art forms outside of photography?

I wish! Although when I think about it, it might detract from my efforts in photography. But I enjoy consuming other forms of creativity - movies, art galleries, books and performance art.  I find it inspirational and informative for my photography.

We adore the work of Kazi Ushioda and we are delighted to have his photographs exclusively at Kolla.
